There are two main types of firewood that can be purchased. They are hardwood and softwood. Hardwood firewood includes Oak, hard Maple, Birch, etc. Hardwood fires tend to burn at a much slower rate (except Birch firewood) and emit more heat than softwoods. Hardwood Birch burns much quicker than the usual hardwoods and is best used if mixed in with other hardwoods when burning. The other commonly purchased type of firewood is softwoods.
Softwood firewood includes Pine, Fir, etc. Softwoods such as Pine seem to be highly available, easily sustainable, and seasons fairly quickly. Fir softwood emits a medium amount of heat, yet produces minimal ash.
