The Linden tree is also known as the American Linden, Basswood, Lime, or genus Tilia. This tree can be found growing throughout the world, in countries such as Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Germany, Guyana, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States. An article composed by Georgia Silvera Seamans article in March of 2010, and posted to the Sustainable Cities Collective website, lists the Linden tree as one of the top ten trees commonly found or planted in the New York City area.
There are approximately 30 different species within the genus Tilia family. The American Linden species is composed of mainly deciduous trees, that can range anywhere from 60 to 150 feet tall or more. The Linden tree’s leaves are usually large, heart-shaped, cordate leaves that measure 2-8 inches across, and are mostly asymmetrical. Linden trees usually have thick and full foliage, due to the large size of their leaves. The American Linden produces a very pale, but richly flavored monofloral honey. Many insects, such as an Aphid and ants, gather the honey to feed upon.
