A tree crotch is a pocket located at the bottom of a point of connection, between two or more tree limbs or tree trunks. There are several forms and types of tree crotches that can be identified on various tree species.
There are three TYPES of crotches that can be found within both hardwood trees and softwood trees. The first type of crotch is known as the trunk-branch crotch, which is pretty much self-explanatory. This is where the tree branch grows directly from the tree trunk, creating a pocket where they meet. Then, there are also the co-dominant stems that form a crotch. This is where, two or more tree trunks that grow from or meet at the base of the tree, form a tree pocket, where water or animals can settle. There are also branch-branch crotches that can be found in many tree species such as Oak trees, Cherry trees, Fig trees, Maple trees, Linden trees, fruit trees, etc. This is when two branches meet at one point creating a pocket.
There are two FORMS of tree crotches that can be identified within various tree species. There is the “U” shaped tree crotch and the “Y” or “V” shaped tree crotch. They are distinguished by the tree lines formed within the tree bark. The “U” shaped crotch has more of a rounded line formation, while the “Y” or “V” shaped crotches have more of a pointed form, where the tree rings meet. This also assists in identifying whether or not a tree failure may occur. Most of the time, with a “Y” or “V” shaped crotch, a tree is considered to be at a higher tree risk of snapping, as compared to the “U” shaped crotch.
