We have previously discussed the importance of Winter tree care, but here are a few more tips.
The Winter in New York City/ Long Island has been brutal this year. It seems like every 2 weeks, we are hit with another 6-12 inches of snow. With the temperatures below freezing, the snow from the previous has not had the chance to fully melt before the new snowstorm. Not only are New Yorkers suffering with delayed travel, but the harsh Winter is taking its toll on trees. See below for a few tips to get your tree through the Winter season…
- Try to clear the snow from tree branches, so it does not weigh them down. Taking a broom to knock the excess snow off, before it freezes, will prevent branches from snapping.
- Keep trees hydrated throughout the Winter by preparing beforehand. In the summer, install a thick amount of mulch (2-3 inches) around the tree’s base to ensure that moisture will become trapped and hydrate the roots.
- Place wire mesh around the lower portion of the tree, to prevent pests, such as rodents, from burrowing into the wood.
- Prune your trees to ensure that healthy limbs/branches are growing and the diseased/dead branches are removed.
- Wrap young trees with burlap, around their trunks, to prevent cracking.
If you follow the tips mentioned by Clearview Tree and Land, you will be taking that extra step for safety and tree health.
