The American Sycamore tree, also know an as Platanus Occidentalis, is a very durable tree, with a fast growth rate. This tree species is native to the North American Region. In its young stages the Sycamore tree tends to have a pyramid shaped crown, which then rounds off during its growth. The Sycamore is easily distinguished by its mottled exfoliating bark. Rather than the bark stretching to make way for new growth, the bark flakes off. This is due to the lack of elasticity within the tree bark’s tissue.
The Sycamore trees, like other tree species, are susceptible to diseases and pests. The pest that is commonly found and favors this species as food, is the Sycamore leaf beetle. Sycamore trees are also susceptible to Plane Anthracnose Disease. Plane Anthracnose is a fungus based disease that once introduced, attacks the tree and defoliates it, making it a ghastly sight for property owners throughout the New York City and Long Island area.
