With temperatures soaring to above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the chance of wildfires occurring has increased. Early into the summer, there has already been a wildfire in Arizona which claimed the life of 19 firefighters. One might think that “we live in Long Island. Those types of things do not happen here,” but the truth is that they do. Last year, there was a wildfire in Suffolk County that burned over 1000 acres of land, leaving some homes destroyed. Wildfires can begin unexpectedly, that is why it is very important to follow all preventative measures.
Wildfire prevention consists of the following:
- Do not start a fire that you will leave unattended
- Dispose of cigarettes in a proper fashion
- Do not burn garbage
- Always have a plan if a wildfire were to occur
- AND being overall aware of your surroundings
